Overview of Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Rare earth permanent magnets made of samarium cobalt have energy products ranging from 14 to 32 MGOe. Unlike neodymium, SmCo is suitable for temperatures higher than 200 C and exhibits far greater magnetic characteristics at temperatures above 150 C. This material is less subject to corrosion and usually does not require coating or plating. Samarium Cobalt may be the most effective answer to difficult magnetic design problems.

Advantages

Disadvantages

• Difficult to machine
• Contains cobalt, which is subject to market value fluctuations

Applications

SmCo is used in pump couplings, sensors, and servomotors; where the magnet is required to perform at elevated temperatures or across a wide temperature range, and in corrosive environments.
